      Il nobilissimo et antiquissimo giuoco pythagoreo nominato Rythmomachia cioè battaglia de consonantie de numeri.

       

      4to (the leaf 205 x 145 mm), recent brown morocco antique style, gilt on gold on covers. Titlepage leaf with an old repair in tghe lower rightr corner, partly affecting the printer's notes. On the white margin a XVIIth's cent. ownership. Note "Z. Vinci' as stamp, and below a ms. inventory note "N° 124". Generally a clean good copy. Ff. (2), 24 illustrated with 23 woodcuts and diagrams. A few contemporary manuscript notes (ff. 4v, 6v, 7v) to amend the text and numbers inscribed in the woodcuts. First edition, very scarce, of this work in vernacular on the game called 'rythmomachia', whose origins were often attributed to Pythagoras. The book, dedicated to Cardinal Paleotti, was formulated in a very concise form, in Latin, by J. Lefevre d'Etaples ('Arithmetica decem libris demonstrata [...]', Parisii 1496, cc. 71-72 rv), and more widely by C. de Boissiere in his 'Les tres excellent et ancien ieu pythagorique, dict rytmomachie [...]' (Paris 1556). Barozzi's writing was later translated by Duke Augustus of Bruns
