Full-page woodcut portrait of Barozzi on verso of titlepage, woodcut diagrams and figures, pp. (16), 272, (24), last leaf with device on recto. First edition of the Latin translation of the comments on the first Book of Euclid"s "Elementa" by Proclus (412-485), a neo-Platonic philosopher and since 450 head of the Academy of Athens, corrected and enlarged after manuscripts, and newly commented upon by Francesco Barozzi, or Barocci, (1537-1604). As a Venetian patrician Barozzi received an humanist education, studied in Padua and lectured there on the "Sphere" of Sacrobosco. His edition of Proclus" commentary on the first Book of Euclid"s "Elements" was the first important translation of this work, as it was based on better manuscripts than previous efforts had been. Barozzi also practiced black magic for which he was imprisoned in 1587 by the Inquisition. The book is typographically very elegant, his woodcut portrait within a wide border of grotesques, with underneath the coat of arms of him and of Daniele Barbaro to whom the book is dedicated. The book is printed in Roman type, and the text of Euclid is set in a still smaller Roman type in woodcut cartouches of three different designs, adorned with grotesque figures.
