4to (the leaf 222 mm), contemporary vellum, some spotted on boards; inside a bit yellowed and a few waterstained, but substantially a genuine copy with mostly original margins (deckle edges in several leaves at bottom). Small tear in the lower blank margin of title, the leaves of first quire a bit misbound but complete. Woodcut device on title, pp. (20), 408, illustrated with many diagrams throughout the text. First edition, as the 1654 edition (never traced anywhere, nor even in Italian libraries) seems to be a ghost, also because the 'civil' approvaton for printing by venetian government is dated february 1658 (so 1659, as in Venice the year was beginning in March), and as well the approvation by the Inquisition is dated 1659. Stephano Angeli was among the most famous successors of Galileo and studied mathematics at the University of Bologna. He taught literature, philosophy and theology at Ferrara from 1644, and then transferred to Bologna in 1645 where he came under the influence of Cavalieri. After leavi
